Crossing Over for Goods


The much disputed Lao-Thai border crossing, known as Vangtao by the Lao or Chongmek by the Thais, still receives heavy traffic on a daily basis.



These Laotian men, sometimes even children, haul commercial goods across the Vangtao-Chongmek border to the Laotian market.



Under the scorching sun, this seafood vendor covers her clams and squids with chipped ice to prevent them from spoiling.


Some tourists and locals come for Southeast Asian seasonal fruits like mandarin oranges, tamarind, and mangoes.


Extra protein comes in different kinds of bugs that are considered a delicacy. Fried water bugs.

Fried silkworm larvae.

Fried black scorpions.

Meatballs, fishballs, and hot dogs on skewers.
