I liked the piece by Kao Kalia Yang. For me, the work brings a very human and direct touch to a subject that seems so distant to most people. I’ve traveled the region extensively and seen both the joy and the pain that are omnipresent in life in Southeast Asia, yet still it’s possible for these things to slip from the front of my mind as I get entangled in my daily life far away from there. That’s why for me when another’s perspective is presented so eloquently, it is more than just aesthetic use of language, it actually re-opens my mind to empathy. In my opinion, most of humanity’s problems would be solved if we all had a deeper understanding of those from whom we differ, and both good poetry and prose are excellent tools to achieve that aim…-Trevor Gile, Italy
